It’s Not Really a Problem Anymore: Applying the Violence and Harassment Regulation Effectively

  • Anvil centre 777 Columbia Street New Westminster, BC, V3M 1B6 Canada (map)

About the Session

Several years into her career as a Health and Safety professional, Claire Mocock joined an organization facing significant concerns related to workplace violence and harassment. The workplace had experienced worker complaints, negative media attention, and involvement from WorkSafeBC, including regulatory orders requiring improvements to its violence and harassment program.

Over a three-year period, Claire led a focused effort to apply the Violence and Harassment Regulation in a way that was practical, visible, and consistently reinforced. Moving beyond policy alone, she implemented a multi-layered approach that included strengthening procedures, enhancing training for workers and supervisors, increasing worker participation through the Joint Health and Safety Committee, establishing a clear code of conduct, conducting risk assessments and inspections, clarifying reporting and investigation processes, and ensuring concerns were addressed in a timely and respectful manner.

In this session, Claire will share the real, practical steps taken to move from complaints, regulatory orders, and uncertainty to a workplace where concerns are addressed early, workers feel supported, and regulatory requirements are met.

Attendees will gain insight into building a layered violence and harassment prevention program that goes beyond WorkSafeBC compliance, with references to Actsafe Safety Association’s Violence and Harassment Toolkit ( for performing arts and live events industry), along with key lessons learned from real-world implementation.
