Matt was born and raised in Vancouver and attended UBC, earning a B.A. in Political Science.

He joined the VPD in 1996. His early assignments have included: Foot Patrol in the Downtown Eastside and the Emergency Response Team. In the Investigation Division Matt was assigned to the High Risk Offender Unit and the Domestic Violence and Criminal Harassment Unit. Matt was promoted to Sergeant in 2007 and worked as the Officer in Charge at the Vancouver Jail before being assigned as the VPD Lead in the development of Vancouver’s Downtown Community Court. Additional Investigation Division assignments included the Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Unit, the Chronic Offender Unit and the Organized Crime Section.

He has been the Sergeant in charge of the Operational Planning Unit, in the Emergency and Operational Planning Section, for the past 2.5 years.
