The 'New View' of Health and Safety: A Cautionary Tale

As workplace health and safety enters its second century, we're becoming increasingly aware of a range of unintended consequences stemming from the ways in which safety is managed within organizations.

This session will act as a cautionary tale to the performing arts sector, and will introduce attendees to the ideas of 'Safety II' and 'Safety Differently' (also known as the 'new view'). Embraced by unions and safety regulators around the world, this new movement is based on three key principles:

  • Workers are a solution to be harnessed rather than a problem to be controlled

  • Safety cannot be measured by the 'absence of its opposite' using injury rates

  • Safety is a moral obligation -- NOT a bureaucratic exercise
